Same course. Same weather. Same opportunity. What was it like to take on 13.1 in the heart of the Badger State?
This race starts and finishes on beautiful Capitol Square, while taking you through some of Madison’s most iconic areas. Beware of the Badgers!
Madison Marathon, Half Marathon, and 10K: A Race by the Numbers
What does it look like to run through the heart of Wisconsin’s capital, surrounded by the hum of excitement, the buzz of sneakers hitting pavement, and the cheers of enthusiastic spectators? Let’s break it down, starting with a few standout stats:
- 30th anniversary of the Madison Marathon, Half Marathon and 10K races
- 7,000 participants
- 10 countries represented
- 47 states represented
- 4,177 first-timers
They say every race tells a story, and this one had a plot twist: badgers. From the airport to Memorial Union Terrace, they were sprinkled throughout the city—statues, signs, even costumed runners. But the true highlight of the day? My parents as they tackled their first-ever 10K! Mix all that together and you’ve got the recipe for a race day like no other.
Capitol Steps to Lake Mendota’s Shores (Miles 1-3)
Madison greeted me with perfection—a 49-degree embrace under an overcast sky. My legs were ready, my mind was calm, and the city’s streets seemed to whisper, ‘Let’s do this.’
The first mile unfolded like a Madison postcard, full of vibrant energy and heart. I launched into my usual quick stride, propelled by the electric atmosphere. The route wove through the city’s bustling core, where I passed iconic landmarks and even a few Badgers—loyal reminders that this wasn’t just any race; it was a celebration of this incredible city.
Mile 2 came into view as I crossed over John Nolen Drive, with Lake Monona sprawling to my left like an old friend. The serene water mirrored some of my favorite views from Michigan, and as the crisp wind rolled off the lake, I couldn’t help but feel a deep sense of familiarity.
By mile 3, I found myself on Cedar Drive, surrounded by an energetic crowd of spectators waving their creative, often hilarious signs. One of the best parts of racing in new cities is the chance to see the fun messages people dream up for their posters.
The Race Within a Race: Meanwhile, Back at the Start Line…
I knew my parents were about to take their first step in a new adventure—running a 10K, 30 minutes behind me. They’ve been faithful to 5Ks and the occasional 8K over the years, but this was their leap into the 10K world! At 72 and 70, they still have the spirit of athletes half their age. I had every confidence they would love the challenge and experience; and without a doubt, they would finish those 6.2 miles with a sense of pride and joy.
Discovering the Tranquility of Lake Wingra and the Woods (Miles 4-10)
Running around Lake Wingra felt like stepping into a postcard. The lake shimmered under the morning sky, its gentle ripples catching the light like a thousand tiny mirrors.
The path wound through the woods where towering trees formed a lush canopy overhead, filtering sunlight into playful patterns on the trail. The crisp air carried the scent of earth and pine, and every step seemed to draw me deeper into a serene, almost meditative rhythm.
Passing Mile 6, the University of Wisconsin Arboretum whispered nature’s charm from my left. Halfway through Mile 7, the path took a brief detour to the sidewalk, teasing me with a quick city vibe before pulling me back into the woods. By Mile 8, it was like reuniting with an old friend—pure trail bliss with the lake running parallel alongside.
Ten miles deep, and my loop around Lake Wingra was drawing to a close. With the lake and woods slowly slipping behind me, I was focused on pushing myself to run even faster in the last three miles of the race.
Signs, Signs, Everywhere Signs…And One That Stole the Show (Miles 10-13.1)
As the miles rolled on, the winding path became a gallery of humor and hope. Spectators with beaming smiles waved their hands enthusiastically, while their signs provided the comic relief every runner needs. Here are a few fun examples below:
Yet, just as I thought I’d seen it all, something happened in the final stretch that caught me completely off guard—a moment I’d never encountered in any race before.
As I climbed the hill toward Mile 13, I couldn’t believe my eyes—there was my mom, nearing the end of her 10K! It was such a surreal and emotional moment. In that moment, the race itself faded, and all I could feel was overwhelming pride. Usually, I’d find her cheering me on at a mile marker or the finish, but seeing her in the thick of her race made this moment unforgettable. My mom, at 70, taking on her first 10K—it was a memory I’ll treasure forever.
As we hugged, my mom’s words were firm: “Go finish! I’ll catch up!” I crossed my finish line to see my dad beaming with pride, 10K medal around his neck, and the energy of the moment was electric. But it wasn’t complete until my mom came through, radiant and triumphant, ringing the PR bell like a champion.
The sound of that bell was more than a celebration—it was the culmination of her hard work and determination, and it made the day truly unforgettable. My heart swelled with joy and I was reminded of two things I wish for: a cure for dementia in their lifetime and the ability to run a 10K with the same energy and joy when I’m their age.
But for now, the journey moves forward.
Up next: Baton Rouge, Louisiana—Laissez les bons temps rouler!
This isn’t just any medal—it’s the second of a four-year series. Each year, runners receive a stunning new medal. Although this looks like any normal medal, it is actually 1/4 of the bigger picture! And if you’re up for the ultimate challenge, completing all four years will unlock the coveted center coin, a true symbol of your marathon journey. When they come together, they form the state of Wisconsin!
From Coverage to Impact: When the Media Steps Up, We All Win
It’s truly humbling to witness the diverse range of people a cause like this touches, and this weekend was no exception. I’d be remiss if I didn’t give a special shoutout to Erin Elliott at Hiebing, whose behind-the-scenes efforts made a huge difference. She and her team coordinated interviews with NBC and CBS affiliates in Madison, making sure this message reached a broader audience. A big thank you to reporters Elly Lailberte and Shaina Nijhawan for taking time out of their schedules to sit down with me across several days—your time, interest, and dedication mean the world.
Cheese Isn’t the Only Thing on the Menu, right?
Sure, Madison’s not all about cheese, but we figured it’s an essential starting point, so we went all in! Our first stop was The Old Fashioned, a beloved spot where the curds reign supreme. Voted the #1 cheese curds in Wisconsin, it was immediately clear why. These curds are as fresh as they come—no stabilizers or artificial ingredients here, just deliciously pure cheese straight from local farms.
There’s something magical about the Saturday Dane County Farmers’ Market, especially with its prime location on the tree-lined grounds surrounding the Wisconsin State Capitol, also known as “the Square.” The market’s charm goes beyond the picturesque setting; it’s filled with everything from fragrant breads and fresh fruits to handcrafted jams, ciders, and even fish (which we happily sampled). But for me, it always came back to the cheese options!
For an experience that feels like stepping back in time, The Tornado Room Steakhouse is your destination. The rustic, supper-club charm of this iconic Madison spot brings an old-school vibe that makes you feel like your grandparents once dined here. From the moment you’re seated and enjoy their exceptional bread selection to the arrival of the famous filet topped with a massive onion ring and served alongside their signature hash browns, every detail is a culinary delight

As you wander through the six uniquely themed campuses, you’ll find yourself stepping into different worlds. Each campus—Prairie, Central Park, Farm, Learning, Wizards Academy, and Storybook—is filled with surprises, and with each tour lasting about an hour, you’ll have plenty of time to soak it all in. The pictures don’t do it justice, but please, take my word!
Sunsets, Scoops and Savory Beverages: The Magic of the Terrace at Memorial Union
This local hotspot offers unparalleled views of the lake and has become a favorite outdoor gathering space. Known for its vibrant energy and unbeatable scenery, Memorial Union is more than just a student center—it’s a place to relax, enjoy local beers, and savor a scoop (or two) of their famous ice cream while watching boats glide across the water.
The Capitol Building: Madison’s Architectural Masterpiece
The reason behind this year’s medal? The awe-inspiring architecture of Madison’s Capitol, with a little Badger pride sprinkled throughout! If you haven’t walked inside yet, make sure you do—it’s a sight you won’t forget!
Who Knew Madison Was Home to Pink Flamingos?
Fun fact: These flamingoes became iconic thanks to a 1979 student prank at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. You learn something new every race!
Over the years, the flamingos returned in various forms, from quirky installations to themed events, sparking laughter in every corner of the city. So much so that in 2015, the Madison Common Council made it official—the plastic flamingo was declared the city’s official bird.
What Makes Sara Klemme the Ideal Race Director? Let’s Find Out!
Sara is, without a doubt, one of the most hardworking and genuinely kind race directors I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting. From the very first moment we connected, she was a pillar of support and encouragement for our Run4Papa cause. Her kindness wasn’t just felt in words, but through every action she took. She welcomed my family and me with open arms, making us feel like a part of something bigger. Sara ran a first-class operation from start to finish. Whether it was the clear and helpful emails leading up to the race, the seamless packet pick-up, or the perfectly executed race day, she ensured everything ran smoothly.
