What do a 5K walk/run, a challenging half marathon, and a 26.2-foot Diaper Dash all have in common? They’re all part of the incredible Buffalo Half Marathon weekend! Whether you’re chasing a new personal best, enjoying a family-friendly event, or cheering on the tiniest racers, this weekend literally has something for everyone.

Race Weekend for All Ages: How My 70+ Year Old Parents Keep their Spirit Alive

Let’s cut to the chase—this race weekend is the ultimate celebration of fitness and community, no matter your age! My parents, in their 70s, took their mark for the 5K walk/run, proving that life’s adventures don’t stop with age.

When the 5K race started, my father was ready to chase down a new personal record, and my mom, in true Grammy Boschan style, decided to kick off her walk a bit early (she left before the gun went off for the walkers!).

As my parents crossed the finish line, their pride was palpable, and their medals were well-earned. Beyond the personal achievement, their participation in the 5K supported a crucial cause—dementia research in the city of light.

Tiny Feet, Big Smiles: The Heartwarming Magic of the Diaper Dash

Forget the sprints and marathons—this race weekend had the Diaper Dash, where babies under 2 took on a 26.2-foot crawl! It was the coolest and funniest sight ever. And let’s not forget the kids’ mini-marathon: little racers (3-8 years) tackled a 500-foot run and earned their own medals.

This was pure genius by race director Greg Weber and I highly recommend future races take a hard look at this experience and think about incorporating this type of engagement into their weekend.

From City Streets to Scenic Serenity at Delaware Park (Miles 1-3)

There’s something magical about the start of a race. Thousands of runners, hearts pounding, ready to take on the challenge ahead. The first mile introduces the course gently, with a flat, straightforward path that invites runners to settle into their stride. Spectators line the streets, their energy infusing the runners with excitement and determination.

There is something special about running under a massive American flag with first responders standing proudly above.

Buffalo’s architectural history unfolds during Mile 2. It’s here that runners get a true sense of the city’s spirit, passing by towering early 20th-century buildings that stand as symbols of a bygone era.

The Green Oasis of Delaware Park marks the entrance into one of Buffalo’s most beloved spaces: Delaware Park. Designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, the park is a sanctuary for both locals and runners. The natural beauty of the rolling terrain and tree-lined paths contrasts with the city streets left behind.

Doubling Back: Facing the Road You’ve Conquered (Miles 4-6)

Running, for me, is as much about the mind as it is the body. A point-to-point race offers constant variety, which fuels my drive and focus. New scenery means new thoughts, and new energy to push through the tough miles. The logistics of planning such a race may be more complex, but the payoff is undeniable. Each twist and turn keeps your mind sharp and your spirits high, making the whole experience feel like a journey rather than just a race. These types of miles are always mentally tough for me and today was no different.

The upside to an out and back: seeing your parents at Mile 5

Fog, Peace and Calm: Embracing the Mystery (Miles 7-10)

As I hit Mile 7 on Prospect Road, the atmosphere shifts—it’s like the city takes a deep breath. Although a bit foggy this morning, Mile 8 brought me close to the edge of the waterfront near LaSalle park. I caught a glimpse of the shimmering water in the distance, hinting at the lakefront that awaits.

At Mile 9, I felt a surge of energy as I pass fellow runners, each with their own stories and motivations. A nod or a smile exchanged can be a powerful motivator, reminding me that we’re all in this together. I also had the pleasure of seeing my parents one last time before the finish line!

As I approached Mile 10, the anticipation builds. Lakefront Boulevard lies ahead. I know that soon, I’ll be greeted by the expansive view of the water, a beautiful reward for the miles traveled.

Although the fog was out, it didn’t take away from the beautiful views on the waterfront

Lake Erie, 7 Foot Poles, and Racing for the Finish Line (Miles 11-13.1)

Miles 11 and 12 gives way to the serene embrace of Lake Erie. Anytime I am near the water, I am a happy man!

I kept seeing these 7 foot poles all around the city. They are placed near fire hydrants for when it snows in the winter!

As I rounded Waterfront Circle, the atmosphere shifted. With the finish line just a mile ahead, a surge of excitement coursed through me. The cheers of thousands grew louder, their energy enveloping me like a warm embrace. It was a reminder of why I run—every drop of sweat, every mile conquered, all leading to this exhilarating moment of crossing that line, and knowing for the past 2:26:04, I gave it everything I possibly could on the streets of Buffalo.

State #36 in the books!

The Power of the Media: Grateful for the Exposure

I was incredibly grateful for the opportunity to share my experience with Channel 7 WKBW. An interview might seem like a small moment in the grand scheme of things, but its potential impact is profound. You never know how a simple story might touch someone’s heart or inspire them to take that first step in their own journey. In a city filled with passionate people, I hope my words can spark motivation and encouragement, creating a ripple effect of positivity.

Thank you Greg for the invite to the VIP party and going above and beyond for our family this weekend.

Hidden Gems: Discovering Buffalo’s Unique Spots

Before you head out of the city, make sure to hit up the following spots below!

Frank & Teressa’s Anchor Bar: Home of the Original Buffalo Chicken Wings

Established in 1935, this local hotspot is an absolute must! If you think you have sampled great buffalo wings in your life, you haven’t. There is a reason these bad boys took over 30 minutes to come out to our table.

My recommendation: order them with their original sauce and don’t overthink the room.

Niagara Falls: Better Than I Remembered as a Kid

I haven’t been back to Niagara Falls since I was under the age of 10. The Maiden of the Mist was worth every penny, but exploring the entire National Park was something I didn’t expect to be so fulfilling. I was blown away by all the sights and sounds of this magical place in the world. IF you have time, bring your passport and take a drive over to the Canadian side.

Mom, Dad, and Jason living it up and being absolutely soaked from head to toe. Worth every moment and memory!

Conversations Matter: Always talk to the locals

One of my favorite things to do in a new place is explore and ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS ask the locals on anything related to history, food, and places to go. When I was walking downtown, I came across this building, but didn’t think much about it, until I was speaking to a local and she said, “All 4,543 words of the original U.S. Constitution appear on the south face of the entry pavilion.

Post-Race Cheers: Unwinding with a cold drink

If you are looking for great service, homegrown beers, and a solid atmosphere, make sure to hit up Big Ditch Brewery. I stumbled into this venue and sat down for a few pints.
